Liberaj

The musical “Liberaj” by composer Antonis Karatzikis, with a libretto by Maria Athini, tells the moving story of a sixteen-year-old refugee who arrives alone from a war-torn region to a small town in Central Europe and struggles to rebuild his life. Facing loneliness, difference, and prejudice, he ultimately finds strength in the solidarity and friendship of his classmates, who help him finish school and rediscover hope.

The title “Liberaj” means “Free” in Esperanto, the “language of hope,” symbolizing the belief that love and humanity can transcend borders and free people from fear and isolation.

The work premiered in 2019 at the Knossos Theater, featuring an original musical score by Antonis Karatzikis.
